The Crown at Woodbridge wins top design award - ‘Best Small Commercial Building 2010’ in East Anglia.

The LABC Awards are the pinnacle of good building design as they are given by the member organisation for Local Authority Building Control Departments at the region’s council bodies.
At a glittering black tie dinner ball on Friday night in Stoke by Nayland, the Crown at Woodbridge was announced as their recipient of the ‘Best Small Commercial Building 2010’ title in East Anglia.

The Crown’s transformation into boutique townhouse inn from a tired ex Forte hotel was the vision of Stephen David, Chef – Patron. His foresight and creativity drove the brief in tandem with David Bentheim, the talented designer behind the project, who worked hard with great local Suffolk expertise and craftsmanship from architects Mullins Dowse and lead contractors AJ Kernahan, both based in Woodbridge, as well as JP Chick & Partners of Ipswich as structural engineers and Suffolk Coastal District Council, who approved and monitored the development.

The LABC described the project as “The Crown within the market town of Woodbridge has been totally transformed to provide guests with a modern and valued facility for all to relax in and enjoy whilst retaining its historic feel”. The judges added “Great care and attention went into the impressive refurbishment of this historic hotel”.

Stephen jubilantly commented: “We are thrilled to have won this Oscar of the building world in East Anglia - it is a great reward for all who have been involved with creating something so special out of a rather dilapidated place before the facelift. Also David and I would to thank particularly all the committed staff from the various businesses involved, it was a real team effort and that shows in the beautiful property they have left us with.”
